Pathogen detection with Geniom technology

The simultaneous detection and typing of all kinds of microorganisms, viruses and other pathogens, together with investigations to evaluate the presence of particular subtypes of a given pathogen are of rising interest to public health, medicine, homeland security and veterinary diagnostics.

Pathogen detection
High resolution resequencing of Coxsackievirus B1. Geniom empowered resequencing of this specific enterovirus type revealed an over 99.9% correct calling rate. The technique is remarkably sensitive and precisely detects any single nucleotide polymorphism in oligos representing other homologous virus types. The low correct calling rate (<78%) clearly indicates the absence of both other virus types in this hybridization experiment and highlights the extraordinary specificity of the system.

Pathogen detection
Simultaneous detection and genotyping of human papilloma virus (HPV ) with Geniom microarrays. Specific identification of HPV type 6, no cross hybridization with HPV -types that display high sequence homologies.

Pathogen detection
Detection image showing a Geniom microarray hybridized with Coxsackievirus B1 and B6 as well as Echovirus 3 samples. Specific probes automatically selected by the Geniom software precisely discriminate highly homologous virus types. Automated array design by the Geniom Software is simply based on imported target sequences, and enables a specific distinction of each enterovirus type despite high sequence homology. Subsequent Geniom empowered resequencing of all 3 enterovirus types revealed over 99.9% correct calling rates for the present target.

Whereas most microarray platform providers offer biochips that are very restricted in terms of performing different analysis methods to comprehensively characterize a given sample, the new generation multiplex assay platform Geniom offers unlimited flexibility and is already applied in molecular analysis of pathogens.

Dedicated analyses allow for rapid adjustments to pathogen specific demands or adaptations to fast changing threats, thereby keeping the pace with accelerating genetic knowledge. The innovative Geniom technology enables essential methods to thoroughly characterize a given pathogen:

  • detection of particular sequences indicative for specific microorganisms and pathogens
  • genotyping revealing exact sequence information
  • gene expression profiling
