Research focus: miRNA

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of non-coding, regulatory RNA molecules encoded by plants, animals and some viruses that have recently emerged as important regulators of gene expression. They are involved in the regulation of many key biological processes by influencing the translational status of the transcriptome.

Most miRNAs are evolutionary conserved in related species and some even show conservation between invertebrates and vertebrates. Many miRNAs have well-defined developmental and cell-type specific expression patterns. However, for most mammalian miRNAs the relative abundance and specificity of expression remain to be investigated.

The increasing number of studies addressing the role of miRNAs in development and in various diseases including cancer emphasizes the need for comprehensive analyses of miRNA sequences, expression and conservation information for the large number of recently proposed miRNAs.

febit’s Geniom technology addresses the special requirements for the analysis of miRNA expression, and it is currently used for several studies addressing the analyses of miRNA expression in different tissues and cells derived from various origins as well as different disease states.

Cell type specific expression patterns are analyzed and compared, and miRNA profiling of cancer cell lines is performed to investigate the influence of specific miRNAs on cancer related signalling pathways. Geniom’s most significant advantage is the extraordinary adaptability to up-to-date information. Keeping the pace with ever-changing up-dates of the miRNA databases as well as easy to handle adjustments of microarray setups enable modern analyses of miRNA profiles.

Our in-house production of ready-to-go miRNA microarrays for quick and easy analyses of miRNA profiles ensures constant content updates to provide the users with state-of-the-art biochips.

In addition to standard miRNA profiling studies, other Geniom supported projects deal with small RNAs and related techniques. The febit synbio team currently establishes the production of small hairpin RNA (shRNA) encoding oligonucleotides and the generation of siRNA molecules.

Future plans include the generation of synthetic, single-stranded miRNA molecules. Thus, the highly dynamic field of small RNA research is supported by the Geniom technology in many ways. Promising results as well as the up-and-coming development of new experimental approaches will enhance RNAi research with Geniom’s high speed and precision!
